Food Import Of China
In the past decade, China has grown exponentially with regards to its balance of trade, as shown by the number of multi-lateral agreements it entered with different countries through the WTO. Due to the cheap products purchased by developed countries from China, the latter had a rapid growth in its export industry. Apparently, goods that are made in China are very commonplace now in society. However, there is one segment of China’s imports that seems to have problems with food and safety standard – food import. The unforgettable China milk scandal that contained melamine has brought panic to worldwide consumers making almost all food items from China a suspect. Due to this, other countries, particularly the United States enforced a lot of inspections and restrictions on all food items from China. To reciprocate, China, through its General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (ASQIQ) also increased its restrictions and inspections of foods that are coming in from other countries.
China has been importing food from other countries to cater to the tastes buds of the young Chinese population whose preference of Western cuisine is ever changing. Also, since the economy is improving, the nouveau rich has adopted the tastes of its Western counterparts. The food safety issue however has taken a different tact, China is so serious that it requires first time exporters of wine and other food items to comply with the standards set by AQSIQ. Likewise, strict inspection has been placed on perishable food items especially those came from long journeys.
